Sharan Bala’s artistic practice explores the complex relationship between identity, dominant societal and medical constructions of sex, and the position of my non-binary intersex body within a binarily structured society. Working across installation, sculpture, performance, and activism, I use my body, research, documentation (including video and photography), and archival materials as both subject and medium.“Since 2021, I have been researching the representation of non-binary bodies in art history. The figure of the (Sleeping) Hermaphroditus has become an important reference and inspiration, and I frequently engage with this historical motif in my work.
