About the spreaker
Helen has been involved in the frontline of campaigning for the rights of trans and non-binary people for almost 20 years, firstly in the UK and increasingly in Europe. She helped incorporate Trans Media Watch in 2010, giving the charity's evidence to the Leveson Inquiry into press standards and ethics in 2012, as well as two subsequent parliamentary inquiries. She stood for the Liberal Democrats for the UK Parliament in 2017 and 2019 in one of the party's target seats, and is currently part of the administration of Wiltshire Council. She has led TransActual since 2020 and has grown the organisation into the UK's leading trans-led advocacy and empowerment organisation. She has been a member of the Council of Europe since 2022, and was a co-rapporteur on the Council's draft report into freedom of assembly and expression of LGBTI+ people across Europe. She also works for a member of the UK's House of Lords, and has met 3 UK Prime Ministers - 4 if you include Hugh Grant. She has been married for over 30 years and, when she had time, likes choral singing and travel.
