About the spreaker
Rahul Upadhyay (they/them) is a queer rights activist, human rights defender, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) facilitator from India. With nearly a decade of experience spanning grassroots community building and global advocacy, they have emerged as a leading voice for LGBTQIA+ rights, particularly in advancing visibility for the Global South.
Upadhyay currently serves as the Co-President of InterPride, the world's largest and oldest LGBTQIA+ Pride membership organization. Their election to this role was historic: Upadhyay is the youngest person, the first Indian, and the first South Asian to hold the co-presidency in InterPride's 42-year history.
In this capacity, they represent Pride organizers globally, focusing on expanding outreach to underrepresented regions and bridging cultural gaps. Rahul also co-chaired the WorldPride committee, where they oversaw the bidding and planning processes for the massive global event, ensuring equitable representation. In 2020, they served as the Lead Curator for Global Pride, a virtual event during the pandemic that reached over 57 million viewers worldwide.
