This session explores how community-driven shelters and support services—rooted in lived experience—offer culturally attuned, accessible care, building trust, cultural relevance, and adaptability—often missing in institutional services. Institutional services often fail to connect due to bureaucratic structures, lack of cultural competency, and distance from lived realities, resulting in gaps in responsiveness, dignity, and tailored support. We’ll highlight models centering autonomy, collective decision-making, solidarity, addressing these gaps.
